In February 2021, the European Commission and the ECB issued a joint statement on their cooperation on a digital euro. Taking account of digitalisation, rapid changes in the payments landscape and the emergence of cryptoassets, the ECB is exploring the possibility of issuing a digital euro, as a complement to cash and payment solutions supplied by the private sector. Following the conclusion of the public consultation on 12 January 2021 and a period of preparatory work, the ECB decided to launch the investigation phase of the digital euro project. The Commission and the ECB will continue to work closely in this investigation phase, which consists of analysing and testing the various design options for the digital euro.1
