In February 2021, the European Commission and the ECB released a joint declaration about their collaboration on the digital euro. Responding to digital transformation, changes in payment methods and the occurrence of cryptoassets, the ECB is contemplating bringing out a digital euro as an accompaniment to cash and services provided by private business. After concluding their public consultation on 12 January 2021 and completing preliminary work, the ECB underway with the data-gathering period of the digital euro scheme. The Commission and ECB will go on cooperating throughout this investigation stage which involves examining and trying out diverse models for a digital euro.1
